Suspect Arrested in Holland Shooting

A 22-year-old Chicago man has been charged with firing shots at a group of people in front of a home on 21st Street last month. Ladale Antonion Brassel was arrested by West Michigan Enforcement Team officers and Holland Police on a parole absconder warrant this week and arraigned Friday in Holland on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and discharge of a weapon from a vehicle. He is being held on $102,000 bond in the Ottawa County jail. Police say Brassel fired at least seven rounds from a minivan at a group of people standing in front of a home in the 100 block of East 21st March 20. No one was hit by the shots. Capt. Jack Dykstra of the Holland Public Safety Department says the shooting may have stemmed from an argument the previous night.
Holland, Young lead Rangers over Mariners 5-3

Derek Holland kept control. Mad about walks that cost him a win last weekend, Holland struck out eight with no bases on ball Thursday in the Texas Rangers’ 5-3 over the Seattle Mariners.
“I’m not going to worry too much about a previous game,” Holland said. “My mentality is I want to be the starter and the closer. I always try to go out there and go as long as I can.” Michael Young hit a two-run homer and had four RBIs for the Rangers.
Businesses adjust to early blooming tulips

The warm weather has tulips blooming early in West Michigan and the businesses in Holland are looking to take advantage of that.

Grand Haven Man Hurt in Holland Twp. Crash

A 56-year-old Grand Haven man was hospitalized after a spectacular-looking crash involving two SUV’s at a Holland Township intersection last night.
According to Ottawa County Sheriff’s Sergeant Brent Converse, Benjamin Broersma was attempting to turn left from eastbound Riley Street onto southbound 128th Avenue on a yellow light, while Patrick Fisher was coming from the opposite direction. Broersma’s vehicle struck Fisher’s in the rear quarter panel, causing it to careen onto the curb, flip over a couple of times, and land back on its four wheels about 100 yards away from the intersection.
Holland swimmers looking for big finish at state finals

The Division 2 state swimming and diving finals will be contested Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center, but Holland swim coach Don Kimble is advising his athletes to forget all about that day. Preliminaries are Friday, and that’s the only day that should be of concern, according to Kimble.
A year ago, the Dutch struggled in preliminary action in the state meet at Eastern Michigan University before rallying on Saturday to take fourth in the state. Kimble said he is hoping his Dutch can avoid a slow start this year.
Shipping company Holland offers new app

Holland, a regional shipping company, has announced a new mobile app to provide customers with on-the-go access to shipment tracking and news.
Real-time shipment tracking and news are the two features of Holland’s website that are most accessed by its customers. That’s why those were incorporated into the mobile app. The free app is available on iOS and Android platforms.
Pearce to take charge against Holland

Stuart Pearce will take charge of the England team for the friendly against Holland on February 29, Football Association chairman David Bernstein has confirmed. Fabio Capello resigned as England manager on Wednesday following the decision by the FA to strip John Terry of the captaincy because of his pending racism trial in July. Terry denies a charge of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand in October.
Holland puts new rules in place regarding noise

On Wednesday night the City of Holland voted to make its noise ordinance a little more strict. However, some people say it’s over-regulation and say there are already too many rules on the books, including some strange old rules in the noise ordinance that regulate whistling, among other things.
The ordinance was written in 1955 and folks are saying the new change is a bit strict and some of the old rules, a bit peculiar.
Holland man honored by Obama returns home
